William Porcelli was born and raised in Chicago's Hyde Park area

He retired and has lived in the Chicago's Beverly area for 40 years.

A Lawyer, musician and artist.

A violinist with the South West Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years

He exhibited with the Vanderpoel Museum in 2000

with 65 of his works on display.

Walter Clute was born in New York and studied at the Art Student League in NYC

He relocated to Chicago and worked at the Chicago Daily News.

Than spent a couple years in Paris at the turn of the century.

He resided in Park Ridge and taught

Summer home in Saugatuck, Michigan

Best known for protraits and landscapes.

MARTHA SUSAN BAKER (1871-1911)

Martha Susan Baker was born in Evansville, Indiana and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago

She also taught with Vanderpoel at the Art Institute of Chgo

She died a couple days before her 40th birthday and is buried in Oak Woods Cemetery

(the Civil War Cemetery at 71st and Cottage)

Believed she painted contrast on a trip to Paris.

"Sunny Days"

Oskar Gross was born in Vienna, his father was an architect and engineer and wanted his son to follow in his chosen career. His art talents led him to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna and then to Munich. Back in Vienna he painted portraits.

"Grandma from the Smokies"

Daniel H. Burnham chose him to decorate some of his buildings in America. He moved to Chicago in 1903 and participated in painters exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.

He was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists and active at the Palette and Chiscel.

The Vanderpoel Gallery received both of his works in

1940.

The Vanderpoel Art Association was founded in 1913 by friends of John H. Vanderpoel

as a memorial to this celebrated instructor from Chicago's School of the Art Institute

Legendary artist Georgia O'Keefe praised him as "one of the few real teachers I have known"

SOPHIA PHELPS PRICE 1876-1961

"Beverly Woods" oil painting received in 1926.

Mrs. Robert N. Price lived in the north Beverly area next to the Dan Ryan Woods.

She and her husband resided there from 1916 to 1937 when they relocated in Florida.

They were early members of the Vanderpoel Association.

In the late 1920's Price became a Florida Orange Grower.

We understand she was active in Florida Art Circles.

ARNO BRETSNYDER (1885-1969) OIL

Born in Chicago and his art education started at Smiths Art Academy, then to The Art Institute of Chicago with John Vanderpoel, with who he later became a close friend.

Exhibited at AIC in 1939 and was a member of the Illinois Society of Fine Artists

He was an early member of the John H. Vanderpoel Art Association.

Devoted most of his time in painting the Indiana Dunes.

Late in life he relocated to Evergreen Park, IL and spent time in the west painting western scenes.

He died in 1969.

GEORGE HERBERT BAKER (1878-1943)

Baker was born in Muncie, IN and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy.

A well known Indiana artist and noted for impressionist landscapes.

Exhibited at the Hoosier Salon, Baker worked in Richmond IN

and belonged to the Richmond Group of Artists

FRANK WESTON BENSON (1852-1951)

He has been called the last great American impressionist, the dean of American etchers and a master of sporting print. Benson defined himself as an artist whose talent was "simply follow the light, where it comes and where it goes."

A Salem native who studied in Paris at the Academie Julian, he returned to New England and established a career as a portrait painter. Benson married and began raising a family, who were often subjects of his paintings. With his open air paintings, Benson inspired what came to be known as the Boston School of Impressionism.

Benson also became part of a group of New York and Boston artists known as the Ten.
